Carol Vorderman and son praised for opening up on education struggles and bullying on 'This Morning'

Carol Vorderman and her son, Cameron King, have been hailed as inspirational after calling for changes to the current education system.

King, 24, was bullied relentlessly at school and branded 'unteachable' by educators due to being neurodivergent and having extra educational needs.

Due to the lack of understanding around high spectrum dyslexia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) at a young age, Vorderman struggled to get him into a learning environment he needed.

Speaking today on This Morning, Vorderman told Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby: "I put him in a little school, probably aged four or five then, and by the end of that year they said 'we can't have him here, we can't teach him'."

He was also bullied by other kids before Vorderman finally pulled him out of school and sent him to an £11,000 a year private school.

“Up until I was 16 I don't think there was a single day that was above neutral in terms of enjoyment because of the bullying,” King told them.

Speaking about where he is in life now, King said: “Well, I just finished my master’s degree in animation from Dundee, now I’ve got my first job, which I start next week and super excited to start that.”

“Specifically, I never thought I would get this far as in I never thought about anything further than what the next thing would be when I finished my honours degree,” he continued.

“When you’d ask me, ‘oh what do you want to do after this?’ I asked, ‘what is the next educational step?’ they said, ‘it’s a masters’, oh well I’ll do that one.’”

“One thing I would love to say to parents because I know there are a lot of parents listening are going through this, is it’s a long road, breathe,” Vorderman said.

“This is a long one because you wake up as a parent every day, and this little bundle of your world, your heart is there, and they're unhappy, and there is nothing you can do.

“There was nothing I could do, I couldn’t give up telly and teach him, not because I wouldn’t give up telly, I didn’t know how to teach him.”

Vorderman later helped out on the phone in from parents who are dealing with similar issues.

“Aww @carolvorders absolutely smashing this learning difficulties phone in today,” one fans wrote on Twitter. “Everything she’s saying is just SO relevant and relatable as a mum to a child with SPLD. Thank you Carol you star.”

Another was inspired to reach out with their own story, and said: “Hi. I'm Math Dyslexic & ADHD. My school teachers thought I was challenging too. With determination & a splash of creativity i was able to step all over my learning difficulties. I'm now a university lecturer. Love to Carol & son xx”
