Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is inching closer to returning to the field but he’s still not ready to play. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero spoke to Panthers coach Ron Rivera, who said that Newton is staying put in the States while the team travels to London to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 6.

Newton started Weeks 1 and 2, but hasn’t taken the field since then due to a Lisfranc injury. It seemed like there was a chance that Newton could return this week when he arrived at Tuesday’s practice without a walking boot, but with the Panthers getting the bye in Week 7, it doesn’t seem like they want to rush him back. Newton was seen at practice zipping around on a motorized bike scooter.

Kyle Allen has been quarterbacking for the Panthers in Newton’s absence, and has done well. He has completed 66.7 percent of his passes over those three games, and thrown zero interceptions. The Panthers have won all three games they’ve played since Newton went down with injury.
