California’s Annual Basset Beach Bash Is a Floppy-Eared Paradise
Basset hounds are a breed well known for being calm and gentle. They’re loving and low-key, making them the ideal family dog for spending hours snuggling on the couch.
Not only do Basset Hounds have delightful personalities, but their physical appearance is also a sight to behold. Their long, floppy ears and endearing goofiness make them a joy to watch, especially when dozens cheerfully play on a beach.
Take a look at this video from August 4 to see why the seaside meetup might be one of the happiest places on earth.
What a fabulous way to spend some time by the ocean! Basset Beach Day is hosted by the Bassett Hound Rescue of So Cal (@bassethoundrescueofsocal), and it's an annual event held near the end of July or the beginning of August each year. Feeling anything but good while on the beach with these floppy-eared angels seems impossible. It’s clear everyone is having a terrific time, and this easygoing group is just so relaxed and well-behaved. They fit perfectly with the low-key California beach vibe as they enjoy the ocean breeze and sandy shore. As Bassets have a strong sense of smell, it must be a joy to sniff around with all the creatures from the ocean and the other four-legged friends who have trekked down the shoreline.

Can Basset Hounds Swim?
They can, but it isn’t their strong suit. With their long, heavy bodies, it takes a lot of energy to keep them afloat. So many might prefer splashing around on the shore rather than swimming. Experts advise us to ensure their safety around water by providing constant supervision and a life jacket, especially if they’ll be around the water for an extended period. According to PetMD, Basset Hounds can be prone to skin and ear problems, so if they have taken a trip to the shore, it’s important to rinse them off and dry their ears before heading home.
