Butt Implants Are On The Rise

It really is all about that bass. According to a new report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), 2015 was officially the year of the rear.

Heading to the doc for your derriere is part of a larger trend of plastic surgery procedures — in 2015, there were almost 16 million cosmetic procedures performed in the U.S., and that includes everything from Botox to breast implants. (The stats don't separate women and men.) But the area in particular where surgeons are seeing big growth is the booty — literally.

In 2015, there were 14,705 butt augmentations, 4,767 butt lifts, and 2,540 butt implant procedures performed.

Butt lifts and implants are both up 36 percent since 2014 (since 2000, butt lifts are up 252 percent), and butt augmentations (when a surgeon takes fat from one area of the buttocks and carefully re-injects it in a more aesthetically appealing place) are up 28 percent.

It makes sense, when you think about how much of the spotlight the big booty has nabbed over the last decade (we see you Nicki, Meghan, and Kardashian Krew). Although we can’t exactly quantify this (the ASPS didn’t ask what inspired each procedure), we have a feeling all that ass attention has something to do with the spike in procedures.

“These things, like a lot of fashion and trends, come in cycles,” says David Song, M.D., chief of plastic surgery at the University of Chicago Medical Center. But he also reinforces that even more than the Kardashian-ification of the beauty industry, we now have better technology to perform these procedures. The tools surgeons now have at their disposal are a lot safer and more precise than they were 20 years ago.
