Bunnings shopper's 'awesome' furniture upcycle: 'What a difference'

Bunnings hack transforms $79 outdoor stool: 'So much better!'There is nothing like creating something yourself, whether it's delicious banana bread or a deck.

In the past two years, many have discovered the joy of baking, decorating, DIYing or upcycling to distract themselves and be creative.

When NSW mum Rachelle Drew upcycled a bedside table from Marketplace, after a quick trip to Bunnings, she posted her results on a Facebook group

"Decided to try my hand at upcycling. All painting and sanding products from my local Bunnings," she wrote on the Bunnings Mums, Inspiration, Hacks, Tips and Tricks page.

She earned more than 150 likes and many encouraging comments.

"Great job. It looks awesome," one fan wrote.

"What a difference," another added.

Rachelle appreciated the feedback, as she is new to refurbishing.

"I was inspired by seeing so many others post their projects," Rachelle told Yahoo Lifestyle.

"My partner is a shift worker, so I thought, when I have some down time, I might give it a go!"

Trial and error

Rachelle turned to the internet for techniques and products.

"I actually googled it and then purchased everything from Bunnings; I think the majority of my wage is spent there," she joked.

"I used the rust-oleum primer, paint in linen white and sealer.

"I was more than happy with the coverage, colours and process."

The mum-of-two learnt techniques along the way through trial and error.

"I started with a brush, however found I achieved a better coverage and result with a small sponge roller," she said.

Only way is up (cycling!)

Rachelle has caught the revamping bug.

"I updated a cupboard my son made when he was in high school on the weekend," Rachelle told us proudly.

"I haven't done a lot of projects yet.

"I have, however, completed a makeover on some chairs and a table I spotted on a Facebook site for free!

"Oh, and I am currently doing a little project with a wine barrel," she added, clearly warming to the upcycling trend.

With the results she's achieving, it's no wonder she's enjoying her new hobby.
