British rapper Ty has passed away at the age of 47 after contracting coronavirus.
Ty's team, who confirmed the rapper's passing, said he had been hospitalised and placed in a medically-induced coma following "complications" caused by coronavirus.
A fundraising page for Ty, whose real name is Ben Chijioke, was set up on GoFundMe by his good friend Diane Laidlaw.
Diane shared the sad news on the page, writing, "It is with much sadness that I have to report the passing of Ben Chijioke, better known as TY Chijioke on the 7th May 2020, close friends, family and fans are devastated of his death."
She added that Ty's passing was particularly shocking, as he was seemingly getting better, "The last update I made was the 19th of April on the GoFundMe page where the community raised 20k for him. Since then TY’s condition had been improving but last week while on a normal ward he had contracted pneumonia which worsened his recovery and ultimately TY’s body couldn’t fight back anymore."
Diane continued, "This is a shock to everyone. I actually have no words or clear way of thinking and hope this comes out correctly when I post it.
I personally wanna say a big thank you to those that donated to the GoFundMe and for the other campaigns that happened online to support TY.
"The family would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has reached out and expressed their concern since he was admitted in hospital but right now they would value having their privacy, so they can mourn privately. They just need time to process."
Tributes have poured in on social media with fellow rapper Roots Manuva writing, "Rest my Brother. You did good."
