Bride Transforms Grandmother’s 1948 Wedding Dress into Her Dream Rehearsal Gown: 'Never Felt So Beautiful'
The wedding dress from more than 76 years ago has now been worn by three of the original owner's descendants
A bride brought new life into a vintage wedding dress.
Katie Klinefelter inherited her grandmother's 1948 wedding dress. Almost 77 years later, she transformed the heirloom into the dress of her dreams.
The bride shared a video of the before-and-after dress transformation on TikTok and Instagram. She explained on social media that her mother's parents got married on June 13, 1948. At the time, her grandmother wore "the most beautiful ivory slipper satin gown with a basque waist."
"Since then, two of my aunts have re-worn the dress, the latest being in 1988 — she updated it by replacing the satin sleeves with mesh and adding lace details throughout," Klinefelter wrote on Instagram.
She continued: "When I got engaged in May 2023, my aunt graciously offered me this dress, and I said 'yes' without hesitation. Not only do I love vintage, but I’ve always cherished heirloom pieces, and it felt like an absolute honor to have such a meaningful dress to wear for my rehearsal dinner."
Klinefelter had a few ideas for her ideal rehearsal dinner dress in mind. While her grandmother's satin gown was beautiful, it was old-fashioned and time for a new look. When Klinefelter first looked at the dress, she "immediately envisioned the transformation." But with the fabric being so delicate, she knew she could only make a few adjustments to preserve its integrity.
"But that was just enough. Elegant. Timeless. Ethereal," Klinefelter wrote. "The material, color, and basque waist were my favorite elements of the dress. We removed the sleeves, lace, and bow on the lower back. The neckline was softened to a square cut, and we opened the back to a scoop. We shortened the train and used that fabric to create a removable neck drape, which completed the look perfectly."

She credited Clarissa Boutique, a bridal accessory destination in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for the transformation. Over the past year, the women there "worked tirelessly" on the gown, creating something Klinefelter said she will "cherish for a lifetime."
"I prayed for my Gran to show up in the sunshine on my wedding weekend, and that’s exactly what she did," Klinefelter continued. "She shined so much light down on me in this dress 🪽I have never felt so beautiful."
"This is the first and ONLY dress re-design that I’ve liked. It’s breathtaking!!!!!!" someone commented on TikTok, with another person adding, "INCREDIBLE!!! you look like a golden age movie star 🥹."
Klinefelter wore the dress to her rehearsal dinner on Nov. 7, the night before her Nov. 8 wedding to Jake Bruder at Prospect Park's Boathouse in Brooklyn, New York.
