Yahoo Lifestyle Bride faces backlash over ‘ridiculous' wedding requirement: 'I feel really insulted by this'
A bride-to-be is facing backlash after requiring her friends and family to write “application essays” for her wedding.
The controversial policy was shared by the woman’s sister, in Reddit’s AITA (Am I The A******) forum). Her post explained why she was considering turning down her invite to the wedding.

“[Am I the a******] for refusing to RSVP to my sister’s wedding because I’m required to write an “application essay” just to attend?” she titled the post.
‘I just feel really insulted by all of this’
The woman wrote that her sister had originally planned a large wedding for February of 2021. However, due to the pandemic, she was worried about having too many people in one place.
Her plan? Cut down on the size by requiring two 250-word “application essays” from each person she’d invited.
“The gist is that they’ll use these essays to choose who can come or not, based on people’s enthusiasm,” the Redditor wrote.” People who don’t write the essays at all will be automatically disqualified.”
The concept took the Redditor by surprise, and left her feeling hurt that she’d need to “apply” for her sister’s wedding.
“I just feel really insulted by all of this,” she wrote. “Anyways I told her in advance I’m not writing 500 words on why I NEED to attend her wedding, spend my own money on plane tickets/hotels, and buy her a present.”
‘A whole new way to be a lunatic’
The Redditor rejected the idea, which apparently caused a massive family feud. Both the woman’s sister and their parents were offended that she refused to write the essays.
“I’m already annoyed at the thought of spending thousands and coming home to quarantine. But I will not belt out 500 words on how this is totally my choice,” she wrote.
Commenters largely took the woman’s side. Many called her sister a “bridezilla” and said her request was “ridiculous.”
“Holy hell this is a new one, props to your sister for inventing a whole new way to be a lunatic,” one user wrote. “If they don’t care enough to ‘reserve’ you a spot, why would you want to celebrate a day with someone so selfish?”
“It’s ridiculous to ask anyone to do this. You invite people to your wedding because you want to share your important moments with them not the other way around,” another added.
Others were slightly more sympathetic, saying the idea could work for friends — but not immediate family.
“It’s one thing for your sister to ask friends or extended family to do this, but immediate family should be automatically invited,” one user wrote.
