Bride faces backlash over ‘insane’ post-wedding demand: ‘That is ridiculous’
A bride’s strange request to keep her sister-in-law’s most sentimental possessions has a family at odds.
The sister-in-law (SIL) took to Reddit’s “Am I the A******” forum to figure out if she should give her family heirlooms away. The bride is married to the woman’s half-brother. After borrowing jewelry from her sister-in-law for her wedding, she now expects to keep it.
“My brother was from my mom’s first marriage, and there’s a 16-year age gap between us (he’s 33, I’m 17), so we don’t have a sibling relationship, we’re more like cousins,” the girl explained. “My mom died when I was 6, so I don’t have many memories with her. However, she left me all of her jewelry, with a handwritten note about the significance of each piece. My paternal family is somewhat wealthy, so a lot of the jewelry is actually gifts from my dad/grandparents to her or paternal heirlooms.”
The 17-year-old cherishes the jewelry because it’s all she really has left of her mother.
“My brother and SIL got married last year, they’re upper-middle class, but my SIL wanted a really lavish wedding that they couldn’t necessarily afford,” she wrote. “My paternal family gifted them a large sum of money and I offered to let my SIL borrow some of my jewelry to wear for the wedding, instead of the costume jewelry she was going to wear.”
The bride borrowed several pieces for the wedding. Then afterward she demanded to keep them all.
“After the wedding, my SIL tried to keep the jewelry since she claimed it was now more sentimental to her. I said no, but my brother told me to give her them, since they’re from his mom too. But I don’t think that’s fair, since the jewelry has no significance for his paternal family,” she continued.
The bride and half-brother felt entitled to the jewelry because they are having a daughter.
“She messaged me with a list of jewelry she wanted from my collection because she wanted my niece to have them,” the teenager said. “They’re calling me a selfish a****** since my niece won’t have any inherited jewelry from her paternal family. I could definitely afford to give the jewelry away or buy more. But I don’t want to and I won’t.”
Fortunately, Reddit was happy to validate the girl’s decision to keep her mother’s jewelry.
“That is your property and they have no right to demand you give it to them. That is ridiculous,” one user commented.
“She is demanding something that she is not owed in any way shape or form and that is not reasonable by a far cry — not suggesting it, not asking nicely, but straight up demanding it, which is insane,” another said.
“If you were to try to come up with a textbook definition of ‘entitlement’ you couldn’t do better than these people,” one person wrote.
