Dylan first moved into the turn-of-the-century townhouse in the 1980s as a renter before he purchased it in the 1990s. He remained the owner until 2005. Prior to Dylan renting, Ruth Gordon, Mary Tyler Moore, and Franco Zeffirelli all called this exact townhouse home. Mary-Kate Olsen lived on the block in the early 2000s; Sondheim’s old place is just a couple of doors down, and Hepburn’s former home, which is also on the market, sits right next door.
Meticulously renovated over the years, the 19-foot-wide townhouse measures roughly 5,400 square feet with five bedrooms, five full bathrooms, and a half-bathroom. Built in 1899, the five-story residence features a private garden, in addition to direct access to the shared garden. There’s also a terrace on the parlor floor that spans the width of the home. Though many original details, such as the oversized French doors and windows and interior archways between the rooms, remain, updates include the introduction of contemporary design elements throughout, along with the installation of an elevator, seven fireplaces, and a sauna.
The home’s first floor houses the traditional kitchen, a cozy dining area and lounge that opens onto the townhouse’s walled private garden. The parlor floor houses the light-filled combination living and dining room, with soaring ceilings, a wood-burning fireplace, and three arched French doors that lead to the 19-foot-wide terrace with steps to the garden below. Facing the street is a gorgeous library with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and another fireplace.
The five bedrooms are filtered throughout the third, fourth, and fifth floors, with the primary suite occupying the entire top floor and comprising a fireside bedroom that spills onto a terrace, a large walk-in closet and a bathroom with a small balcony.
