Blind White Cat Discovers the Magic of Fall Through Touch, Smell, and Sound

There's nothing like watching your pet experience something new for the first time. When it's a blind pet, it takes on a whole new meaning. For Noey, the blind cat, losing his sight hasn't stopped him from enjoying life; it just means there's a lot he has yet to discover about the world around him. Recently, Noey got to experience all the wonders of fall through all of his senses, and his mom captured it all on camera.

Noey's mom, Heather (@fost.er_kittens) shared a touching video on Instagram showing his reaction to fall's bounty, and it will make you "see" things in a whole new light. Take a look at this sweet boy loving the autumn weather!

"This is Noey’s first year here. Last year at this time he was critically ill. It’s a little magical to imagine the world through his senses," the caption says.

In the video, sweet Noey sniffs and cuddles the outdoor walkway before standing up to take it all in. His little nose crinkles as he sways his head back and forth, trying to imagine the beauty of what he's sensing. A moment later, a bee flutters by and Noey playfully swats at it, proving that cats will be cats, with or without their sight!

The post goes on to explain Noey's history, which began in a shelter with his mother and siblings. They were all sick with upper respiratory infections and "some didn't survive." Luckily, Noey did.

The kitty was adopted out but returned six weeks later with a very serious illness due to an infection in his eyes. Unfortunately, nothing helped, and his vision was already impaired, so the decision was made to remove the eyes. He was later diagnosed with FIP, which can be fatal. He spent 84 days on the medication that saved his life.

"After 3 months of treatment and 3 months of observation without relapse he was considered cured!" the caption said. "By the time treatment ended he had stolen all our hearts and so we officially adopted him."

This little guy is a pro at stealing hearts, as evidenced by the near 50,000 likes, with many commenting the gift we've all been given to watch Noey experience the outdoors this way.

Tips for Caring for a Blind Cat

Cats who've lost their vision (for whatever reason) can still have amazing lives. It's important to make sure the world around them sets them up for success. Catster says the transition for a blind cat takes a little preparation but isn't difficult to do.

First, make sure the house is free from hidden hazards, like furniture corners, and "baby-proof" them by padding the sharp edges. Make sure to speak to them frequently so they can learn to follow your voice. If you have other pets, it's also helpful if they wear some kind of bell to alert your blind cat when they're near so they don't get startled by the sudden presence.

If you have a blind cat who previously had vision, keep all their things in the same spots so they don't have to re-learn the location of the litter box or food bowl. The same goes for the furniture. you don't want to make it harder for them to adjust.

Offer them a safe space to hide or relax away from the usual noise of the home. Losing sight is an adjustment for all, so be patient and let them wander at their leisure as they figure out their routine. They will still live a happy, normal life just like Noey as long as you keep loving them!
