Bill Maher, 68, Offers Bold Defense of Dating Much Younger Women

Bill Maher weighed in on what he believes is the “appropriate age” for a romantic partner while discussing age gaps in relationships during a recent podcast appearance.

The Real Time with Bill Maher host chatted briefly about dating and relationships while on Fly on the Wall, the podcast hosted by Dana Carvey and David Spade. Like Spade, Maher has never been married—a detail that came up near the end of the episode that was released on Wednesday, Jan. 8.

After Spade said visiting Maher’s own Club Random podcast was “like The Bachelor,” Maher, who turns 69 later this month, declared that he and Spade are “the last two bachelors” before pitching his own idea for a new reality TV show.

“I think a great show would be one of us—mostly, probably, me—doing The Golden Bachelor, but—like our real lives—not with an age-appropriate woman,” Maher said, referring to the dating trend that he and Spade share. Maher declared that dating “age-appropriate” women is “boring” as he insisted his reality show pitch would instead feature “an age-inappropriate woman.”

“Because, you know what the appropriate age for a relationship is? One that works,” Maher said.

The trio of comedians listed off a few celebrities who have embraced relationships with large age gaps, including Bill Belichick, Cher and Madonna. Maher then alleged that when women date much younger men, “it’s empowering,” whereas “when men do it, we’re perverts.”

The conversation ended with Maher insisting that his proposed spin on The Golden Bachelor could be “a great show.”

The Golden Bachelor, but, you know, with women that David and I are attracted to,” Maher explained. "And that doesn’t make us bad people.”

The former Politically Incorrect host’s comments came just a few months after he was spotted spending time with Al Pacino’s 31-year-old ex-girlfriend, Noor Alfallah. Despite dating rumors that circulated last fall, Alfallah told TMZ in mid-October that Maher was “just my friend.”
