Bedrooms rarely come equipped with adequate storage. And without a home for all your items, it’s too easy for your clothes, shoes, bags, jewellery, books and photos to become clutter. But, with a few clever and attractive storage solutions – flat pack, in the main – you can turn chaos into order. Then your sleeping space will become a place in which you can truly relax and unwind. Decorator’s tips: - Toss mismatched hangers as irregular shapes take up more space. And, while you may have lots of wire coathangers, they’re tough on clothes, so opt for padded or wooden hangers instead. - Store your clothes by outfit – a cardigan with matching pants, and so on. Or, sort by colour to find the right piece in a flash. - Look out for over-the-door shoe and jewellery organisers with pockets. They will help free up valuable wardrobe space.

All extra storage is welcome, so position a low chest of drawers at the foot of your bed and use it to store your bed linen. Choose a style that’s strong enough to sit on and has castors, so it’s easy to move when making your bed.

Use the ceiling to your advantage. Install a self-assembly, adjustable pole that fits between your floor and ceiling, then mount a mirror unit on it. The mirror swivels to reveal shelves and hooks – ideal for your belts, bags and scarves. Add individual hooks or a rack of hanging hooks inside your wardrobe doors. Bags, belts hats and scarves will naturally find a home here.

Organise your underwear, socks and tights in handwoven storage with compartments and save yourself from frantic searches in a messy drawer. You’ll never wear odd socks again!

Photos personalise bedrooms but they can end up looking like a whole lot of clutter. A pair of narrow floating shelves, one above the other, utilises the space over a chest of drawers and takes care of the problem. The lip on each shelf prevents the frames from slipping.

Think vertically, adding shelving to walls and possibly extending them to the ceiling. This a particularly good idea if your bedroom is small, and open shelving close to the bed holds way more than two bedside tables.

Stash your special-occasion shoes in matching boxes with windows so you can see them. As for scarves, bags, belts and the like, separate them into matching boxes with labels, so you can find things quick smart.

Hang a floating shelf cabinet above your bed so your books, DVDs and CDs are concealed behind a drop-down door. Line up the top of the unit with the top of your wall shelves or lower, if you prefer.

Make better use of your wardrobe space. It’s as easy as adding a shorter second clothes rail lower down in your wardrobe. This way, you have enough space for long dresses and coats, as well as for shorter items like skirts and shirts. Store everyday items neatly on the floor so you’re not labouring to get to them. Choose a combination of open containers and lidded boxes, or whatever works for you. Store your jumpers and T-shirts on open shelves where you can see them clearly.
