Environmentally-friendly bags

Glad® is helping Australian families take small steps to be even more environmentally responsible with the introduction of the GLAD® Degradable Plus™ range of Kitchen Tidy and Garbage Bags.

Rubbish and its disposal are a fact of life. However the choices you make today can have a big impact on the environment of tomorrow. To address this, GLAD® has upgraded many of its GLAD® disposable bags and packaging to be even more environmentally responsible.

GLAD® Degradable Plus™ bags are degradable, which means they will break-down and fragment when exposed to the elements. Furthermore, GLAD® Degradable Plus™ products feature minimal and recyclable packaging, and use soy-based inks.

GLAD® Degradable Plus™ would like to help everyone make small, simple changes around the home to make a difference to the environment, so here are some tips to get you started:
• Reduce - Purchase food products in bulk and store them in re-usable glass containers
• Reuse – Keep a compact reusable shopping bag in your handbag for unplanned purchases
• Recycle – Make sure you have a recycle bin in your home to help you sort out your rubbish

Did you know that:
• One recycled aluminium can saves enough energy to run a TV set for three hours
• If everyone in Australia recycled their newspaper every day, we could save almost 2 Million trees per year
• Recycling just one plastic bottle saves enough energy to power a 60W light bulb for six hours

A common question: what’s the difference between degradable and biodegradable?
Degradable is the gradual breakdown of components of a material, as a result of a natural element, eg.: heat, wind, rain. Biodegradation is the complete chemical breakdown of a material by biological activity, especially by microorganisms. GLAD® Degradable Plus™ products are oxo-biodegradables, which is a combined two stage process of degradation, followed by biodegradation.

GLAD® Degradable Plus™ bags are available in three sizes of Drawstring Kitchen Tidy bags: Small, Medium, and Large, as well as a Large Drawstring Garbage Bag. Available at Woolworths and local supermarket groups from October 2010. The Kitchen Tidy bags have an RRP of $3.19 and the Garbage Bags have an RRP of $3.99.
