Native-animal friendly garden

The Australian Koala Foundation estimates there are less than 100,000 koalas left in the wild, with more than 80 per cent of their habitat destroyed since European settlement. Follow these tips to protect our wildlife.

  • Get into the garden and plant fruit and nut trees and vines.

  • Plant trees that are native to your area. Koala-friendly trees include forest red gum (Eucalyptus tereticornis), river red gum (E. camaldulensis) and yellow box (E. melliodora).

  • Keep your garden free of chemicals.

  • Grow wattles – they’re fragrant, easy to maintain and produce seeds that provide food for native birds.

  • Train your dogs to not chase wildlife.

  • During September buy a No Tree No Me bumper sticker. They’re available through various outlets and cost only $1.
