How to make peg angels
How to make peg angels

Gather your supplies

  • Scraps of plain and print fabrics
  • Sewing thread
  • 25cm rickrack or braid
  • Craft glue
  • Wooden dolly peg
  • Coloured and cream felt
  • Small button
  • Small amount of wool yarn
  • Metallic chenille stick
  • Sequins
  • Fine black marker pen
  • Blusher or red pencil
  • Hanging thread
  • Hot glue gun (optional)
  • Pinking shears (optional)

Here's how

Step 1

For angel’s skirt, cut two 22cm-long rectangles from contrasting fabrics, one 7cm wide and the other about 4.5cm wide. You can cut one or both low edges with pinking shears, if desired. Stitch each rectangle into a circle along centre back seam, allowing 5mm seam allowance. Press seams open.

Step 2

Stitch or glue a line of rickrack or braid around lower edge of 1 skirt. Place shorter skirt on top of longer one, with upper edges and back seams matching, and run a line of gathering around upper edge, through both layers. Dab a line of glue around ‘waist’ of dolly peg and pull up skirt tightly to fit. Secure ends of gathering thread and trim.

Step 3

Cut small piece of coloured felt to wrap around ‘bodice’ of peg and glue it in place so it covers upper raw edge of skirt. Glue a small button to front of bodice.

Step 4

Cut 6-8 strands of woollen yarn and tie them tightly in middle with another piece of the same yarn. Unravel ends of yarn on both sides of centre knot to make fluffy hair, then smear a little glue on head of peg and stick hair in place. Trim to desired length.

Step 5

Enlarge Angel wings template (above). Cut wings (in 1 piece) from cream felt. Cut a metallic chenille stick in half and wrap 1 end tightly around centre of wings, to gather them. Form other end of chenille stick into a circle to sit above angel’s head as halo. Decorate edges of wings with sequins. Using a hot glue gun (or craft glue), fix wings and halo to centre of angel’s back.

Step 6

Draw face with black marker and add red cheeks with blusher or red pencil.

Step 7

Attach a hanging loop of fine cord or thread to chenille stick at back.
