Learn how to Patchwork step by step

STEP 1: Make a 15cm-square cardboard template and cut the required number of squares for your project.

STEP 2: Lay out squares in a colourful grid, alternating direction of knitted stitches.

STEP 3: Following your grid, join squares to make strips, then join strips to make a large patchwork square or rectangle. Join squares as follows. With right sides up, lay 2 squares flat, butting them together so raw edges meet. Centring 2cm-wide cotton twill tape (in a colour to suit ) under the join and just short of sides, pin 2 edges together catching tape below. The tape reinforces the seam and prevents stretching.

STEP 4: Set your sewing machine to the widest stitch length and use a clear foot. Working from the right side, machine-zigzag the raw edges together, catching the tape underneath. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 until you have pieced all your patchwork.

For a neater finish, in place of Steps 3 and 4, join strips as follows. With right sides facing, stitch squares together to make strip. Join strips to make a large square or rectangle. Zigzag all raw edges to neaten.
