A friend once told me that she had ditched all her expensive skincare and makeup products, and instead had cut out refined sugar and was eating a lot more sweet potato.

“That’s why I’m so glowy,” she told me, caressing her - admittedly luminous - skin. “It comes from the inside, out”.

But I’m not - and might never be - ready to give up my beloved Cadbury’s Dairy Milk and Rich Tea biscuits. So I set out on a mission to prove to my friend - and myself - that there was a product in existence that could give you the glow of a woman who was eating like a goddess.

And reader, I found it.

The BECCA Skin Love Glow Elixir is a lightweight “skin-clarity boosting” serum infused with “Glow Nectar Brightening Hydra Complex” – a blend of natural ingredients that the company claims can help brighten, hydrate and nourish the skin.

The serum is said to immediately smooth and hydrate the skin while boosting brightness over time. It contains “an optic blurring blend of microfine pearls” that is said to “capture light” (how magical does that sound?) for a smoother and brighter looking complexion.

I add three drops of the sparkly liquid to three pumps of my Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation and blend the two together on the back of my hand (please, no MUAs come for me after that confession).

I then just brush it onto my face like I would any normal foundation, and the result is an uber dewy, natural glow, akin to that of Cheryl (formerly Cole) - I imagine, I’ve never actually seen her close up.

The drops aren’t greasy and feel light on your skin. They do dilute your foundation, so it will give you a lighter coverage, but they don’t change the texture or the overall look.

Plus, they smell like watermelon and so feel quite refreshing when added to your morning routine.

There isn’t only one way to use the drops. BECCA suggests you can also use them before makeup as a base – making for a quick and lasting makeup application.

I’m not the only person who has fallen in love with this serum. “This is a really lovely product. It comes in beautiful packaging and is this lovely bluey, turquoise colour. It smells so fresh and feels so cleansing and nourishing when you put it on,” adds another convert on the John Lewis website.

“I used it with moisturiser on top so my skin felt extra soft. I've been using it for just over three weeks and my skin feels smoother and I've noticed less spots appearing too.”

Another added: “Have absolutely loved using this Glow Elixir. I've been trying to find a product which works well with my current foundation as I love a "dewy" look, but my foundation often flattens other products, however this Elixir is the perfect base and still provides a glow even with foundation on top.”

Ready, steady, glow!
