Perth-born Renae Ayris has narrowly missed out on the Miss Universe 2012 title.

The 22-year-old dancer was one of five contestants out of the original 89 to make it to the last round, but was she beaten at the last hurdle by Miss Universe USA, Olivia Culpo.

Brazil, the Philippines and Venezuela were represented in the final five, as well as USA and Australia.

The Miss Congeniality title, won by Australian Jesinta Campbell in 2010, went to Miss Guatemala.

In the finals Ayris wore swimwear by WA label Kooey, a white gown by former Project Runway finalist Craig Braybrook in the Evening Wear section and a gold and white dress by Jessica Bregenhoj in the National Costume parade.

Ayris was asked a question about body image in the question and answer section.

The last Australian to be crowned Miss Universe was Jennifer Hawkins, who won the competition in 2004.

Going into the finals Ayris was fifth favourite to win the title, while South Africa's representative Melinda Bam offered the shortest odds.

Nigerian-born Australian singer Timomatic performed his single 'Set It Off' at the finals, which were held at Las Vegas's Planet Hollywood.

Andy Cohen and Giuliana Rancic hosted the event.
