A study by UK health and beauty retailer Superdrug asked 18 female graphic designers from around the world to Photoshop an image of a regular looking girl to make her ‘beautiful’ according to the country’s ideals.

The results were shocking.

In China, she was whittled down to a measly 46kg, giving her a BMI of 17, which the Eating Disorders Association in Australia considers ‘mildly anorexic’.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Spanish designer Photoshopped her to almost 70kg, resulting in a BMI of 25.5, which is considered overweight. With this BMI, she is at risk of developing coronary heart disease, as well as other health conditions such as diabetes.

The study proves just how vastly beauty ideals can vary around the world.
