100 Years of Beauty Around the World

Episode 10 of Cut.com's 100 Years of Beauty series is Germany, a country with dramatic transformations of economics, politics, and culture in the past century.

The team drew inspiration from the likes of 1940s film stars like Lilli Baker (who fled from Nazi persecution and ended up being nominated for two Golden Globes) and 1990s supermodels like Claudia Schiffer, but the most interesting part of the video is when Germany splits into East and West states during the Cold War, leading to radical differences in beauty trends.

While West Germany embraced imported luxury trends due to its growing wealth, East Germany became a center of political resistance and borrowed aesthetics from the British punk movement.
