3,2,1...Happy New Year! A New Year’s Eve party is undoubtedly one of the most exciting and hopefully glamorous nights of the year. With this in mind I wanted to share my top beauty tips to get you through the big night looking H-O-T!

The thing to remember is that this is a night to break the rules and have a little fun. Nude make-up be gone. Let’s get out the full beauty arsenal and party!

Shimmer and sparkle

Get ready to glow with a flattering highlighter to bring out the contours of your face and to send the message that you are ready to shine. Avoid anything with glitter particles, as this will take the look from sexy to tacky. I love gold shimmer in either powder or liquid gel for olive-toned and dark skin and a silver highlight on pale to pinky undertones. Asian skin can use a pink or pearlescent highlighter to get the glow.

Brands to love: Benefit does an excellent selection of highlighters. I love Girl Meets Pearl liquid highlighter. My personal go-to shimmer product is Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick (available fro $85 from selected Myer, David Jones nationally); every year I invest in one and it never lets me down. Available in various combinations to suit your skin tone, it and can be used as a blush, eye shadow and bronzer! Each Shimmer Brick lasts at least 8 months.

Play up the eyes

Eyeliner, lashings of mascara, false lashes and sexy smokey eyes are the code for night time glamour. It’s also the one night of the year that you can really up the ante on the seduction.

Thick, feline eyeliner is both modern and seductive. It’s also a nice change from the day to day so invest in a great liquid eyeliner but flip it by trying a fun colour. NP Set has released some gorgeous double-ended glitter eyeliners which feature metallic shades silver, gold, blue and more. They look incredible either alone (if you dare) or over your black eyeliner.

Smokey eyes don’t have to be black. Try using plums, blues and browns to bring out the colour of your eyes and to change from your normal look. Revlon has great smokey eye pen that takes the guess work out of creating a great smokey eye and Giorgio Armani has a gorgeous eye palette this Christmas with a smoking hot selection of shades that create a very luxurious smokey eye.

Change the shape of your face and draw attention to your eyes with the application of some fun and exaggerated false lashes. Shu Uemura has the very best selection of avante garde lashes in their its Tokyo Lash Bars (Prices vary, available from selected David Jones). My favorite includes a delicate line of crystals that rest against the eye line. Sounds scary but looks utterly gorgeous.

Mascara is the secret weapon of most beauty sirens and this year is no time to be shy! My tip: Apply your first coat from base to tip. Let dry and re-apply. Model Co Fibre Lash Mascara is the best for creating fullness and length, particularly if you don’t have naturally long lashes. My go to mascara is Lancome Hypnose. Never clumpy, dark black and builds up nicely to create length, curl and drama.

Long wear lips

The most annoying thing is to have to break up the party or an intense conversation with a cute guy to re-apply your lippy. This is a night to plan ahead and prepare if you want to be ready for the midnight kiss. My advice is to swap lip gloss for lipstick. If you are addicted to gloss, try a long- lasting formula with higher pigment instead. I love Mirenesse Lip Bomb;iIncredible colour payoff, the most stunning reds and pinks plus super long lasting shine.

To prepare your lips for long-lasting colour and hopefully some smooching follow these steps:

Step one: Exfoliate your lips. Make up a perfect lip treatment with a tablespoon of sugar (brown sugar works best) and a teaspoon of olive oil. Massage gently over the lips to gently exfoliate and plump up the lip area. Rinse to remove oil. This creates a perfect base for lipstick to last longer and appear perfectly smooth. This is really key for bright colours.

Step two: Line the outline of your lips with a matching lip pencil but also fill in the whole lip. Chanel lip pencils are the best in the world. Beautiful colours, they are gentle on the lips (not too drying) and add a touch of glamour.

Step 3: Use a lip brush to apply lipstick starting from the inner lips and take them to the lip line. Blot with a tissue to remove excess lipstick, then apply another layer. Blot again and apply a third layer. A rule of thumb to keep in mind is that sheer and high shine lipsticks don’t last as long as matt and long wear stains. Revlon Just Bitten Lip Stain Balm is fantastic combo of shine and long wear colour. I am also a fan of Estee Lauder’s Double Wear Lipsticks. They have an incredible selection of colours and can last up to 8 hours.

Follow these tips and check out these products for a night to remember. Don’t forget most beauty counters will give you a complimentary make-up lesson or even a makeover with purchase of product. This is a great way to try out the look and get some extra tips for free.

Party on ladies!
