Barbara Corcoran Says She Prefers Separate Bedrooms from Husband Bill Because It Keeps Sex 'Short' (Exclusive)

"What I need more than anything else is a respite, and my husband is not relaxing," Corcoran said of having her own bedroom, which her husband is only permitted to enter when she invites him

Barbara Corcoran loves her husband, Bill Higgins, but she's just as big of a fan of having personal space.

In PEOPLE's exclusive preview of the newest episode of The Jamie Kern Lima Show, the Shark Tank star, 75, explains why the two have succeeded in their marriage by sleeping in separate bedrooms.

"I think there's something to be said about your own private space. I lead a very busy life. I have a huge family that I'm always entertaining. I have very sincere, active friends and so what I need more than anything else is a respite, and my husband is not relaxing," the television personality said.

Corcoran said that while her husband talks and has "ideas" that run through his head, it is difficult for her to "come up with the energy at the end of the day to listen to him and to nod and to contribute to the conversation."

"I run a little short," she said. "Better I go to my room, and I have an hour to myself."

The business entrepreneur added that she and Higgins, who married on Valentine’s Day in 1988, also have rules for entering each other's bedrooms.

"If I go to the living room, my husband follows me. I go to my bedroom, he doesn't dare come in. I have to invite him into my bedroom and I like it that way," she said. "He's never invited me back 'cause he knows I'll never come into his bedroom, but I have to invite him into my bedroom."

While Corcoran jokes that she likes having separate bedrooms because it also makes sex a "short thing," she said that it doesn't get in the way of the two having special nights together.

"My idea of a special night with my husband is a good game of Scrabble. He'll often say to me S or S, and I'll say 'Scrabble' 'cause the first S means sex, and I say, 'No, Scrabble,' and I love beating him at Scrabble, and he loves beating me at Scrabble, and that's a great night," she said.

This isn't the first time Corcoran has opened up about having a separate bedroom from her husband.

In March, the Shark Tank personality got candid about the secret to her longstanding relationship and shared how the couple sleep in "separate bedrooms" in order to keep things "fun."

“I’ve had a separate bedroom with Bill for like 40 years,” she explained. “I have to invite him in — he invites me in occasionally.”

She added how their arrangements add a bit of intrigue and "sexiness" now that they're able to adhere to their own sleeping patterns and cleanliness.

“He puts piles of stuff everywhere and I am very neat so I couldn’t sleep well at night. Now I sleep like a baby," Corcoran said.

In February, Corcoran shared her best piece of marriage advice with Hello!.

"You really have to take your partner as they are and not hope through the marriage they're going to change. Because they never do. You have to be satisfied! What you see is what you get," she said.
