The 'baffling' mistake Meghan made on first solo outing with the Queen

Meghan Markle‘s first five months as a royal have certainly been busy.

Since her wedding to Prince Harry in May, the Duchess of Sussex has completed her first solo engagement as a royal, embarked on her first international royal tour and announced she is pregnant with her first child.

But before all that, Meghan kicked off her royal duties one month into her marriage by being Queen Elizabeth II’s plus-one for an official visit to Cheshire, England.

While the pair appeared to be as thick as thieves during their appearance, there was one mistake the 37-year-old made which apparently “baffled” the Queen.

New royal biography

In an excerpt from royal biographer Robert Jobson’s new book, Charles at 70: Thoughts, Hopes and Dreams, it’s revealed that Meghan unknowingly didn’t follow royal protocol which required her to wear a hat.

The Duchess had been instructed by the Queen’s aides that she would be wearing a green hat, the excerpt published by the Daily Mail details.

Meghan, however, wasn’t aware that as a result of that decision, she was also expected to wear a hat, as she was “still new to the intricacies of palace protocol”.

This move left Her Majesty “a little baffled”.

“I don’t think the Duchess fully understood,” a senior figure who’s reportedly close to the Queen says in the book. “This was not a request. They are for others to make, not the Queen.”

Jobson notes in the biography the Duchess’ mistake and “lack of respect” not wearing a hat was “duly noted” by senior members of staff for the monarch. But it seems to us to be more of a mistake by her staff than anything else.

Meghan Markle’s first appearance with the Queen

Despite this mishap, the Queen and Meghan appeared to be the best of friends during the appearance back in June.

So much so, the internet totally fell in love with the dynamic duo.

Let’s not play favourites here though, the same courtesy was also extended to Kate Middleton about a year after her 2011 wedding to Prince William.
