'Bachelorette' Bad Guy Devin Strader Claps Back at Arrest Allegations
Jenn Tran’s history-making Bachelorette journey ended in a train wreck, and now things have gotten even worse, with disturbing allegations surfacing about her final pick, Devin Strader.
Reality Steve first reported the news that he’d obtained an affidavit that claimed Strader was arrested for allegedly burglarized a former girlfriend's Louisiana home in 2017.
The Bachelor spoiler expert and then Entertainment Weekly both got the legal documents from the Baton Rogue Police Department that showed details of Strader's arrest. The affidavit also claimed that his unnamed ex requested a restraining order against him at the time.
As Parade readers know, Jenn, 26, proposed to Devin, 28, in a surprising twist on The Bachelorette’s finale that aired Sept. 3. They seemed happy but split just two months after their engagement.
Devin Strader has been attempting to save face since the tearjerking After the Final Rose episode that cast him in a most unflattering light. Days after the finale, he posted a now-deleted 13-minute video on Instagram defending his actions.
Now he's responding to the allegations about his past that have caused fresh outrage in Bachelor Nation.
Strader was charged with one count of “simple burglary of an inhabited dwelling,” according to affidavit obtained by Reality Steve. In addition, the ex claimed she was physically, verbally and mentally abused during her relationship.
“Most recently, there have been challenges from a low point in my past that have been brought up and severely misconstrued," Strader said in a statement posted on Instagram. "The accusations are simply not true as I have never inappropriately laid hands on another individual or treated my ex-girlfriend in any of the ways I have been depicted,” Strader said in a statement shared on Instagram. “That restraining order was never granted, and fully dismissed. My college ex-girlfriend and I ended up reconciling and eventually ended our relationship on good terms. This was the first time I ever fell in love and I learned a lot from our relationship. It was a growing experience for both of us.”
The Hollywood Reporter has noted that a production source told the publication that details in the restraining order were sealed at the time of the show’s background checks on contestants.
According to the woman’s claims, she came home from an out-of-town trip to find her home burglarized with many of her personal items broken and/or thrown on the floor. Also, she alleged that a diamond necklace Strader had given her while they were dating was gone.
The ex, who said she and Strader lived two doors down from each other, charged that he had come to her home “banging on the door several times and screaming at her.” That is why she had filed a restraining order against him.
In another shocking claim by the ex-girlfriend in the affidavit, she alleged that Strader “made a fire out in the street with what appeared to be the actual restraining order” and when she “had a tire flattened on her vehicle and when it was getting changed, [Strader] came outside and began laughing at her.”
According to THR, which also obtained the now-unsealed affidavit, the woman alleged that Strader once “put me in a choke hold covering my mouth” and “spit on me and threw his drink on me at [a] Pelicans game in front of everyone in the stands.”
She claimed she woke up with bruises on her “knees, elbow, stomach, arms” and a “pounding” head and that Strader almost “killed” her and didn’t “want to talk about it.”
Entertainment Weekly has reported that after Strader’s arrest on burglary charges, he allegedly pleaded guilty to charges of criminal trespass and simple criminal damage to property of less than $500. He also reportedly received one year of unsupervised probation.
Fans saw Strader appearing to be head over heels for first Asian-American franchise star on The Bachelorette, declaring his love after their fantasy suite and making a special trip to Jenn’s Hawaii hotel room to beg her to return the sentiment.
On her Bachelorette finale before a live studio audience, however, Jenn appeared crying and told host Jesse Palmer what had happened after they left Hawaii as an engaged couple.
“I thought I'd found the person I'd spend the rest of my life with," she said, sobbing.
"And then...as soon as we had left Hawaii, things were different. It felt like he was pulling away."
Then he called her and broke off the engagement, teary-eyed Jenn told the host and live audience.
When Devin appeared on the show, they had a tense confrontation.
"What I can't understand is everything you did after you broke our engagement, ending the engagement in a phone call," she told her former fiancé.
Later, to give his side of the story, Strader posted a video on Instagram showing private text messages from Jenn. Bachelor Nation slammed the move and he deleted the video.
But happily, Jenn has turned the page. She began competing on the new season of Dancing with the Stars, which premiered Tuesday night on ABC.
Jenn performed well in her night one cha cha with partner Sasha Farber, earning a score of 19 out of 30.
Judge Carrie Ann Inaba called Jenn entertaining and Bruno Tonioli said she blossomed in front of them.
