Baby among three people dead in Melbourne house fire

The body of a baby has been found after a house fire in Melbourne’s southwest, along with two adults.

Victoria Police confirmed on Wednesday afternoon the infant’s body was found in the home on Totem Way at Point Cook.

Two adults were also found dead. The three people are yet to be formally identified.

Emergency services were called after reports of a house fire which spread to nearby residences about 3.40am (AEDT).

“The townhouse was destroyed by the blaze and two neighbouring properties were also damaged,” Victoria Police said in a statement.

“Arson chemists are continuing to forensically examine the property and the investigation remains ongoing.”

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Kennedy said a neighbour made a "heroic and brave effort" to rescue the occupants with a ladder but was overwhelmed by the intensity of the flames.

"Sadly they did their best but the fire took its toll and nothing could be done," Sen Sgt Kennedy told reporters.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined but it is being treated as suspicious.

"It certainly is being treated as suspicious, predominantly because of the intensity of the fire," Sen Sgt Kennedy said.

"When fire services first got here it was fully engulfed.

"The townhouse was raging, particularly at the front and upstairs ... (and) with accidental fires that doesn't normally occur."
