Review: This beachside resort is a music-lover's dream

Move over Patong, because there’s a new hotspot on the Thai island of Phuket, and it’s quickly winning fans over with its vibrant music scene, private pool parties and luxury accommodation.

A 20 minute drive north of Phuket International Airport lies Baba Beach Club – a beachfront resort surrounded by tropical vegetation that’s all about good vibes and good tunes.

Inspired by Ibiza's lavish party scene, the resort is a music-lover’s paradise that regularly hosts guest DJs and a pool fitted out with underwater speakers so bathers never miss a beat.

The perfect playground for the rich kids of Instagram, the resort is also becoming a hub for festivals, and collaborated with Ibiza party brand, Circoloco, to host the five-day Colours of Love festival in March.

Coming to Phuket for the first time, the festival brought a lineup of international DJs, including Marques Wyatt and Wild Sirenda, and pulled in a crowd of 2,000 people.

But the party scene is paired with the ultimate luxury of the resort’s villas, as I found out when I was recently invited to stay.

The estate is lined with individual villas, which are a sophisticated blend of cool stone floors and timber features, and I had the pleasure of staying in a two-storey one by the pool.

Walking in, you’re immediately greeted with a cool drink and a chill playlist emanating from the high tech speaker systems on both levels. The first floor is an open plan area with an island bench kitchen and a spacious living room that, with the bifold doors opened, extends out into a private garden just steps away from the main pool.

Meanwhile the master suite upstairs is fitted out with a king-size bed, window nook and walk-in wardrobe, with a generous ensuite featuring an impressive tub. But perhaps the most enchanting feature is the mood lighting, which allows you to select from three options of brightness: ‘Welcome,’ ‘Chill’ and ‘Sexy.’

It wasn’t long before I was listening to the chillout sessions while enjoying a bubble bath in ‘sexy’ lighting. Top it off with room service in my hotel robe, and I was in heaven.

The villas steal glimpses of the resort’s private Natai Beach, which feels exactly like that - private. Hidden away through a mini forest of trees and sunbeds, the beach is extremely clean and the perfect place to watch the sunset over the water.

By day, Baba Beach Club is ideal for lounging by the pool or on the beach chairs. They even provide floating bean bags and inflatable pink flamingos to accessorise your Instagram feed.

There’s also a spa and a gym on site, both of which have views of the beach.

If you’re looking to spend your day exploring, be aware that there are very few shops within close walking distance, so you’ll need to travel at least 10-15 minutes to find these. However, the islands of Phang Nga Bay, including the iconic James Bond Island (named after its appearance in the film) are a short boat ride away.

As the evening approaches, you can make use of the resort’s swim-up bar where you can watch the bartenders craft your cocktail as the sun sets over the beach in front of you.

By night, Baba Beach Club really shines, as it takes on the feel of a groovy pool club hosting a range of local and international DJs to play music through the resort’s world class, Funktion-One sound system.

The bar is bright, lit by hanging globes reflecting a circle of light from the mirror tiles, while the pool area lights up with pink fluorescent lights.

With the atmosphere of a booked-out resort, you certainly won’t feel like you’re missing out on the nightlife in town. At least I certainly didn’t.
