A young mum has opened up about how she had no idea she was pregnant until she gave birth to her baby boy in the shower.
Aymee Almeida, from Brazil, shared the bizarre story in a viral TikTok video she captioned “hard to believe right?” before speaking to local media about her surprising journey to motherhood.
The now 20-year-old had just moved cities after coming out of a violent relationship in 2018, saying she stopped going to the gym and started eating poorly so didn’t think anything when she gained some weight.
“I gained weight quickly but I didn’t mind, I justified it through a lack of time,” she said.
Some months later she began to feel ill and suffered low blood pressure constantly. Aymee says she went to the doctor who told her “it was probably something to do with her emotional state”, and she ruled out pregnancy as she was still having what she thought were periods.
Aymee, who was in the middle of studying, then began to notice her feet were swollen and because both her mother and grandmother suffered from vascular problems, they took her to the doctor again, where she was told the issues could be linked with her kidneys and she agreed to undergo further testing.
On her last day of the course she began suffering from cramps but finished her classes and went to her friends' house for some food.
“I couldn’t eat or be with my friends. I tried to sleep but I couldn’t ignore the pains,” deciding to go home instead and take a shower.
She says she went back to the shower twice, but on her third trip she sat on the floor and could not get up.
“It was so intense that I just cried,” Aymee remembered. “I didn’t have the strength to look for my phone in the bedroom and ask for help. I began making involuntary pushes, holding onto the shower cubicle.”
She said she did not realise she was giving birth until far into labour.
“I only noticed what was happening when the baby’s head was already coming out,” she said. “I didn’t even have time to be surprised. To give you an idea, it didn’t even my cross my mind to call an ambulance. I was just thinking of keeping the baby okay.”
She gave birth to the boy and cut her own umbilical cord with a knife, got rid of the placenta with the help of an internet video and cleaned the baby off.
At first Aymee didn’t go to the doctor as she was worried about how to explain the birth to her family. She says a friend eventually convinced her to go to the doctor the day after.
“The whole medical team were impressed with my condition. I started seeing what happened as a miracle.”
Aymee says her parents were in shock when the doctor called them, with her mother thinking it was a “prank,” but she added: “When they came to visit me, the supported me and ran to but things for the baby, as I did not have anything.”
Her son Pedro Lucas, who is now 18 months old, was healthy after the birth and Aymee, who is now studying nursing, admits it took her “some time” to see herself as a mother, but says she is “now a better mother than I expected to be”.
In the viral TikTok clip Aymee can be seen smiling at the camera when the words "things about me nobody will believe” appear on screen.
She then points to a series of sentences reading: “I discovered my pregnancy at the moment I was giving birth. I had my baby in the bathroom of my flat alone.”
