Couple who met at Sydney Airport get married on Jetstar flight

A couple who first met each other at Sydney Airport have said ‘I do’ on a Jetstar flight 37,000 feet over the Tasman Sea.

David and Cathy Valliant, who are both aviation enthusiasts, got married on a flight from Sydney to Auckland on October 9th, because David hails from Australia and Cathy is a Kiwi.

To make their flight extra special, Jetstar arranged for the couple and their whole wedding party to be seated at the front of the plane, where they held their ceremony.

Jetstar ground crew employee and marriage celebrant, Robyn Holt, married the happy couple, who first met at Sydney Airport after they decided to play a game called ‘Airport City’ - an online city-building simulation game.

“We chatted for more than a year and then I got up the courage to call him for his birthday and sing him happy birthday,” Cathy said.

“It just evolved from there. We first met in person in 2013 at Sydney Airport when I took my first trip to Australia. We locked eyes and that was it.”

Three years after they first met, the couple took a Jetstar flight from Brisbane to Melbourne, where David had actually planned to propose.

While he got too nervous because of the attention they would have received from all the other passengers, he ended up popping the question that night.

When it came to planning the big day, the couple knew they wanted ‘something really memorable’, which would symbolise their love of aviation, Australia and New Zealand.

“I thought: I’ll be cheeky and ask Jetstar. Without telling Dave, I posted on Jetstar’s Facebook page with the ask. I was so excited when they said they’d see what they could do,” Cathy revealed.

The day was everything Cathy and David could have dreamed of with the pilot and staff greeting them onboard and the couple receiving a special welcome when they touched down in Auckland Airport.

“It was the most amazing experience and something we will remember for the rest of our lives,” Cathy said.

“I wish I’d met David 25 years ago. I feel our lives really started when we met. Since we met four years ago we’ve done so much together, it’s hard to picture life without him. We definitely love planes. We even have a rule that whoever sees the first commercial flight on any day doesn’t cook.”
