Auburn fined $250,000 by SEC for fans storming field after Iron Bowl
Auburn has been fined by the SEC for field-storming yet again.
Tigers fans swarmed the field at Jordan-Hare Stadium after Saturday’s dramatic 48-45 Iron Bowl victory over rival Alabama, resulting in a $250,000 fine from the conference. It marks the fourth time Auburn has violated the SEC’s “access to competition area” policy, so the fine was especially steep.
From the SEC:
The policy states that “access to competition areas shall be limited to participating student-athletes, coaches, officials, support personnel and properly-credentialed individuals at all times. For the safety of participants and spectators alike, at no time before, during or after a contest shall spectators be permitted to enter the competition area. It is the responsibility of each member institution to implement procedures to ensure compliance with this policy.”
Auburn fans have stormed the field following a football victory three times in recent years. The first was in the infamous Kick Six win over Alabama in 2013. The second was the SEC West-clinching victory over the Tide in 2017. The third, obviously, was Saturday’s triumph. The school was also fined for a court-storming that followed an upset win over Kentucky in basketball back in 2016.
A first offense costs a school $50,000 with the financial penalty increasing with each subsequent violation. But that’s a small price to pay for beating the mighty Crimson Tide for the second time in three seasons — even if some fans got stuck in the hedges along the way.
