Ariana Grande Grabs Her “Wicked” Costar Cynthia Erivo’s Fingernail in Viral Video and Fans Have a Lot to Say About It
Fans have flocked to social media to comment on the moment, which has also inspired a series of memes
Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo sparked a viral moment during the Wicked press tour.
During an interview with Out.com posted on the outlet's Instagram on Tuesday, Nov. 19, the stars were informed that several queer fans on social media were "taking the lyrics of 'Defying Gravity' and really holding space with that and feeling power in that."
"I didn't know that was happening," said Erivo, 37, who plays Elphaba in the movie. "That's really powerful. That's what I wanted," she continued, looking over at Grande, 31.
"I think that it's really important for [Elphaba] in that moment to not allow the things that have hurt her, that have stripped her of her humanity, to keep her down," Erivo continued, referring to her character's powerful musical number.
During the exchange, Grande gently took hold of Erivo's long, green fingernail (an homage to her Wicked character) and lightly tapped it — seemingly in a gesture of support. The clip has since gone viral.
"I've officially been thinking about ariana holding cynthia’s nail for a full day," one Instagram commenter wrote, adding, "I see this image every time I close my eyes."
"I genuinely cant stop laughing at this. Every time I see it I burst into giggles," another shared.

"So haunted by the image of Ariana Grande reaching out a trembling hand to grasp Cynthia Erivo’s single finger," yet another person commented on X (formerly Twitter).
Another X user joked that they already had their Halloween costume picked out for next year, writing, "I'll be going as ariana awkwardly holding a singular finger on cynthia's hand."
Other fans placed a close-up of Grande and Erivo's hands onto famous images, including Michelangelo's "Creation of Adam" in Rome's Sistine Chapel and Tom and Shiv from Succession.
Some fans simply marveled at the interview clip as a whole.
"I’m completely mesmerized by this clip ... it’s almost like they are speaking a language I don’t understand," one X user wrote. "I can’t catch the sense of it for a single moment. I’m not understanding the words or the feelings or the energy at all. It’s amazing."
Wicked is directed by Jon M. Chu and also stars Ethan Slater, Jeff Goldblum, Jonathan Bailey, Bowen Yang, Peter Dinklage and Michelle Yeoh.
The film will be released in two installments, and the first part is in theaters now.
