Another mum left shaken by exploding Kmart scales

A second mum has complained after her glass bathroom scales from Kmart unexpectedly shattered in front of her children.

Michelle was in the bathroom with her two young daughters, aged seven and eight, when the $15 scales exploded in front of them.

“My daughter had moved the scales back to where they usually go after she had weighed herself and a few seconds later they just exploded,” she tells Yahoo Lifestyle.

“She was in tears as she had thought she had done something wrong and it scared the living daylights out of her.

“I calmed her down and told her it wasn’t her fault and they continued to shatter a good two to five minutes after the initial ‘explosion’.”

Pieces of the glass scales were scattered all over the bathroom, and Michelle is still stunned by what happened.

“My kids were distraught as it was loud and extremely weird!” she says.

“They are in the bin now and mess all cleaned but honestly it was pretty scary and totally out of the blue. The weather wasn’t hot so I didn’t think that played any part in it.”

A spokesperson for Kmart has said that these type of bathroom scales are safe, and that they are designed to shatter safely if ‘chipped or compromised’ in order to ‘reduce the risk of serious injury’.

“At Kmart we’re committed to ensuring the products we sell are fully compliant with regulations and safety standards, which is why all of our scales have been independently tested by third party laboratories,” a Kmart spokesperson says.

“Our Slimline Glass Digital Bathroom Scales are manufactured from tempered safety glass which means the glass, if chipped or compromised in any way, will break into small fragments to reduce the risk of serious injury – in some cases this gives the customer the perception of the glass exploding.”

Michelle’s experience comes after Sydney mum-of-one Kelly was left shaken after her scales exploded in front of her son.

Kelly had purchased her scales back in 2014 and says she had never had a problem with them until they unexpectedly shattered.

“It was incredibly loud. It sounded like a someone throwing a glass onto the ground with force,” Kelly says.

“It scared us both so much. I didn’t know what was happening.

“My son was only standing about two inches away from them when they exploded. I was just so thankful he wasn’t hurt, he was really lucky. There were glass shards all around him.”
