Anne Hathaway reveals she had miscarriage while playing pregnant character off-Broadway
NEW YORK — Anne Hathaway has gone public about her past miscarriage.
The Academy Award winner is opening up further about the fertility struggles she shared on social media in 2019.
Hathaway, 41, previously intimated she went through “infertility and conception hell” with both of her pregnancies on Instagram. She and her husband Adam Shulman are the parents of sons Jonathan, 7, and Jack, 3.
In a cover story for the April issue of Vanity Fair published online Monday, the actress explained her rationale for sharing her truth.
“Given the pain I felt while trying to get pregnant, it would’ve felt disingenuous to post something all the way happy when I know the story is much more nuanced than that for everyone,” the star said.
Hathaway went on to reveal that she had a miscarriage in 2015 during the run of her one-woman off-Broadway show “Grounded,” in which the character she played had “to give birth on stage every night” during her six-week run.
She didn’t hesitate to be as transparent about the sad news of her pregnancy loss and opted to “keep it real” with friends who attended her performance.
“It was too much to keep it in when I was onstage pretending everything was fine,” Hathaway said. “I had to keep it real otherwise … So when it did not go well for me, having been on the other side of it — where you have to have the grace to be happy for someone — I wanted to let my sisters know, ‘You don’t have to always be graceful. I see you and I’ve been you.'”
“The Princess Diaries” breakout added: “It’s really hard to want something so much and to wonder if you’re doing something wrong.”
