Jolie, 49, spoke about her new Netflix movie Maria, as well as her Tony Award-winning production of The Outsiders musical—but some viewers thought her ex-husband, Brad Pitt, may have been an unspoken part of the conversation.
After seeing a clip of Jolie's introduction on Thursday's episode posted to Instagram, many fans thought it was interesting that the song playing was a version of Dolly Parton's "Jolene," which is famously written from the perspective of a woman begging another woman not to "take her man."
However, a source close to the show told Parade "there was no ill intent when the band played her intro song," adding, "It’s absolute nonsense to think otherwise. Everyone was thrilled to have her there."
At first watch, many viewers speculated the song may have some relevance in Jolie's life, as she has long been accused of having an affair with Pitt while he was still married to Jennifer Aniston.
"The intro music ... 😂☠️," one fan on Instagram pointed out, while someone else thought the song choice was "kinda rude" to the actress, considering the sensitivity of the topic.
"That was probably not the best song. Yikes," another user wrote.
Other users thought the message of the song likely wasn't meant as an insult to Jolie, and some even assumed that the Eternals star "probably approved it."
"I think they cleared it with her. They were so glad to have her, I’m sure they did," someone else predicted. "She seems very open about herself, even joking about it."
But as some fans pointed out, the song choice may have only been due to the similarities in the titular character's name and Jolie's name. A few people noted that Fallon's live band was even singing the name "Jolie" rather than the original lyrics.
"i think they maybe, possibly, prolly were tryna be clever by doing a play on the names jolene/jolie without even realizing the song’s whole theme lmaooo 😭," one person joked.
