Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's divorce has been a long and drawn out process, with litigation spanning nearly a decade. But after eight years, the former couple has officially reached a settlement, and can now put their marriage firmly in the past.

“More than eight years ago, Angelina filed for divorce from Mr. Pitt. She and the children left all of the properties they had shared with Mr. Pitt, and since that time she has focused on finding peace and healing for their family," Jolie's lawyer, James Simon, said in a statement to People. "This is just one part of a long ongoing process that started eight years ago. Frankly, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved this one part is over."

The outlet also spoke with a source close to Jolie, who added, "she doesn’t speak ill of [Pitt] publicly or privately. She’s been trying hard to be light after a dark time." Pitt's representative did not respond to the outlet for comment. The settlement was reached on Monday, December 30.

Jolie and Pitt dated for 12 years, and later tied the knot in 2014. Two years later, the Lara Croft: Tomb Raider actress filed for divorce on September 19, 2016, after the then-couple and their six children took a private plane. Jolie alleged that Pitt was abuse to her and their children, though he was not charged by authorities after investigations, and the actress later refused to press charges.

Amid the divorce, Jolie and Pitt's children have denounced their father in subtle ways—Shiloh, Vivienne and Zahara have all opted to use Jolie as their last name instead of Jolie-Pitt, and  Us Weekly reported in 2021 Maddox “doesn’t use Pitt as his last name on documents that aren’t legal and instead uses Jolie,” but at the time Angelina did not “support” his desire to “legally change” his name.

While Jolie has remained relatively tight-lipped about her divorce from Pitt, she alluded to how difficult it's been while speaking about her role as Maria Callas in Maria. "I related to the part of her that is extremely soft and didn’t have room in the world to be as soft as she truly was and as emotionally open as she truly was," the 49-year-old said during a press conference, according to People. "I think I share her vulnerability more than anything."
