Andy Lee spills on Today show hosting rumour: 'We’d had that chat'

He’s one of the most successful comedians and hosts in Australia and now Andy Lee has revealed he was almost swayed to join breakfast TV.

Speaking on the I’ve Got News For You podcast, the 40-year-old star said he was approached by Channel Nine after Karl Stefanovic’s Today show exit in 2019.

“We’d had that chat, about whether I’d be interested in looking at that,” he revealed.

“But the fact of getting up that early … it’s the same reason that Hamish [Blake] and I wouldn’t do breakfast radio. The idea of getting up that early didn’t float my boat.”

“But that stuff happens all the time with all shows across all networks – people sound you out to see if you might be interested.”

Andy, who found fame as part of the Hamish and Andy duo, is currently hosting his own TV game show called The Hundred on Channel Nine, with guests such as Sophie Monk and Tommy Little joining him on the set.

Meanwhile, Karl Stefanovic caused shockwaves in 2019 when he was sensationally dropped from his role as co-host of the Today show.

Interestingly, he opened up to Andy Lee about the attention he received at the time.

"Towards the end of last year, I was cooked. It had taken its toll, a lot of the [media] attention – all the unwarranted attention, I thought, and you can’t control any of that," he said on Andy Lee’s The Hundred.

"I’m not going to complain too much about that, but what it meant was that in a work capacity I don’t believe for a second I was at my best.

"I think I was struggling towards the end of last year."

However, new hosts Georgie Gardner and Deborah Knight struggled to regain viewers and Today's ratings hit an all-time low.

Karl was brought back as co-host of the show in January 2020 alongside Allison Langdon.
