Anchor Bay Picks Up Comedy ‘Sour Party’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Anchor Bay Entertainment has acquired the global rights for the comedy “Sour Party,” co-written, directed, and produced by the married duo Amanda and Michael Drexton. “This love-hate letter to Los Angeles is a semi-autobiographical ode to the worst parts of ourselves as told by two self-obsessed, flailing 30-somethings,” said the Drextons.

The film stars Samantha Westervelt, another co-writer of the film, alongside “Pitch Perfect 2” alum Reggie Watts, “Stand By Me” cast member Corey Feldman, and Augie Duke from “Mayans M.C.” The film revolves around two broke women, Gwen (Westervelt) and James (Amanda) in their thirties who embark on a mission to collect money from failing, wannabe artists with the hopes of raising enough to buy an expensive gift for a baby shower thrown for Gwen’s sister. “It is a feminist take on the traditional, male-dominated buddy comedy,” said the Drextons.

“When we first saw ‘Sour Party,’ we were floored by its fresh perspective,” said Zambeck. “The Drextons have created a riotous and relatable farce that is as smart as it is satirical. We’re thrilled to bring this film to audiences and add another classic to the long history of irreverent comedies.”

The film was executive produced and filmed by cinematographer Steven Moreno, known for “Better Off Zed” and “Panic.”

“Sour Party” was originally released in 2023 at the Sydney Underground Festival, and won the 2023 Chattanooga Film Festival Audience Award for Best Feature.

The revived Anchor Bay is owned by Starz Distribution co-founders Thomas Zambeck and Brian Katz. Zambeck and Katz negotiated the Anchor Bay Entertainment deal on behalf of the filmmakers.
