Super-savvy old-school shoppers can turn saving money into an art form, staying on top of coupons and sales, even negotiating in person if something gets marked down just after they bought it. (Don't you hate when that happens?)

Online, of course, it’s a little trickier. Getting ahold of the best coupons is not as straightforward as clipping them out of the newspaper. There are all sorts of software extensions to download, or pages and pages of promo codes to sort through. None of that will trouble you right now. Because we found out that Amazon has a secret page full of coupons you can use immediately.

What it is

It’s pretty simple. Like your good ol' clipped newspaper coupons, Amazon offers up various discounts on things like tools, pet supplies, electronics and fashion. Once you "clip" the coupon of your choice, it’s automatically added to your cart and the discount is applied once you check out. And just like that, you’ve saved some money without giving away a ton of your time.

How it works

You can find Amazon’s coupon page by clicking on the Today’s Deals section that’s found right under the homepage search bar. Once you land on the TD page, you'll see the coupon section on the top left, right under where your delivery location is typically shown. (Coupon categories can be found on the left sidebar.) Once you find something of your liking, simply press "Click Coupon." The discount is automatically saved to your cart, but you won’t see it reflected in the price until you check out, so don’t freak if the full price is still displayed. To make sure the coupon will be applied, view the item and check under the price. The amount to be saved should be right under the total cost.

After that, all you have to do is pay, pat yourself on the back and wait for your (now-discounted) delivery!

Tips and tricks

  • Just because you clip a coupon doesn’t mean you have to immediately buy the product. You can save your coupons and apply them when you decide to close the deal on the item, so don’t stress out about how much time you’re spending browsing the page; your coupons will be there waiting for you at checkout.

  • If you’re searching for a particular brand, you can type the name into the search bar to view all of the related savings.

  • The 'Sort By' drop-down menu on the right-hand side can help you find the biggest sales, expiration dates and the most popular items — all great things to note while browsing.

  • Above the list of categories on the left side of the page, there’s an option that allows you to view all of the coupons clipped, which can help you compare discounts and rates easily.

  • If you have Amazon Prime, you’ll get free shipping, of course. Not yet a member? Well, you can sign up for a free 30-day trial here. (And, of course, even those without Prime get free shipping on orders of $25 or more.)

Things to remember

  • Coupons are only eligible for one item, which means if you buy six packs of toilet paper, only one pack will receive the discount shown on the coupon.

  • New coupon offers are constantly added, so check the page regularly for up-to-date savings.

  • Although you don't have to use your coupons immediately, there is an expiration date on them, so if you find something you want, best to get it sooner rather than later.

  • If you return an item bought with a coupon, the amount you saved might be subtracted from the return credit.

  • There’s an option to share a coupon on social media or via email, so if you find a discount your friend will love, send it their way (it won’t take away from your ability to use the same one).
