Amanda Holden’s new E4 comedy show, The Holden Girls: Mandy and Myrtle, has proven divisive to viewers over its bizarre brand of comedy.

The series sees Holden and her foul-mouthed grandmother ‘Myrtle’ (played by Keith Lemon star Leigh Francis) move in together in a half-candid camera, half-mockumentary.

With celebrity guests dropping in periodically to tackle the bizarre antics of the Doncaster nan — including Ben Shephard, Ruth Langsford and Howard Donald — Holden is left having to reel her in as she gets out of control.

However, due to Francis’ old lady prosthetics not fooling anyone at home, viewers are seemingly nothing but confused about the whole situation.

Venting their frustrations, viewers largely slammed the show on Twitter.

One wrote: “I caught less than ten seconds of #mandyandmyrtle but that was more than enough for me to know with some degree of certainty that it is beyond doubt the worst show ever made.”

“Oh dear #TheHoldenGirls - this is something that should never have happened - or something that should have happened 30 years ago when it may have seemed 'funny'.

I am watching it - but I can't really believe it's happening #why,” wrote another.

A third irate viewer was also angry at the show and said: “I want to know who THE F*** thought #TheHoldenGirls was a good idea. The previews have been SO cringe!! I forgot to turn over after Married At First Sight and I’m just bewildered that Ch4/E4 have ploughed money into this.”

However, some jumped to the show’s defence, arguing it needed more time to grow as it was new, and that is wasn’t as bad as people were making it out.

One said: “So many people against a bit of fun on the #theholdengirls hashtag lmao. Just tune out if you don't enjoy it. I thought it was hilarious.”

While another admitted: “As terrible as The Holden Girls is, I can’t stop watching it.”

“Loving #TheHoldenGirls (well I was one myself until I married),” said a third. “I must be the only person in the country who had to look up who #LeighFrancis was! LOL @AmandaHolden Congratulations, 'pitched perfect'!”

The Holden Girls: Mandy and Myrtle continues tonight at 10pm on E4.
