Yahoo Lifestyle Amal Clooney has a bridal moment in shimmering Versace gown for justice awards in New York
George and Amal Clooney hosted a star-studded event in New York last night that honoured defenders of justice around the world. The couple co-hosted The Albies award ceremony at the New York Public Library – and naturally wore their finery for the auspicious black-tie occasion.
While George opted for a classic black tux and bow-tie, Amal arrived wearing a glittering white gown that was custom-made for her by Donatella Versace, who was also present at the event – Versace being one of the night's lead sponsors. The elegant dress featured spaghetti straps and a full, sweeping train, and was covered in shimmering crystals that caught the light. She accessorised with droplet earrings, a diamond bracelet and matching minaudière.
The couple were joined by a host of their A-list friends and contemporaries for the evening, with a guestlist that included everyone from Julianne Moore, Emily Blunt and Anne Hathaway to Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss and Scarlett Johansson. Several stars took to the stage to present during the night – including Meryl Streep and Viola Davis – while Alicia Keys and Andra Day gave special performances.
This is the second year in a row that The Clooney Foundation for Justice has honoured courageous defenders of justice at The Albies, an award ceremony hosted by Amal and George Clooney alongside the president of the Ford Foundation, Darren Walker. The awards were named after Justice Albie Sachs in tribute to his seminal role in ending apartheid in South Africa. They aim to "shine a spotlight on brave individuals who, at great personal risk, have devoted their lives to justice," explains the official press release.
This year's honourees were:
Lifetime Achievement Award: The Congolese gynecologist and human rights advocate Denis Mukwege, for his heroic leadership to stop rape as a weapon of war and save the lives of women in the DRC
Justice for Women Award: Niloofar Hamedi and Elahe Mohammadi, for their fearless reporting that brought the death of Mahsa Amini, who was in Iranian police custody for not covering her hair, out of the shadows
Justice for Survivors Award: The Ukrainian rights group Truth Hounds for their work to bring justice to the people of Ukraine by uncovering evidence of atrocities committed by Russian forces
Justice for Journalists Award: The Syrian Center for Media and Freedom of Expression for their advocacy for free speech, freedom of the press, and other human rights in Syria
Justice for Democracy Defenders Award: Thai Lawyers for Human Rights, for their defence of thousands of students, activists and journalists who have been arrested under Thailand’s laws criminalising peaceful protest and speech
