Alix Earle Takes 'Cosmo' Behind-the-Scenes of Her 2024 Halloween Costume Transformation
Alix Earle has a unique Halloween costume mantra. “This might sound kind of crazy,” she said, “but I like to let the character of whoever I’m dressing up as take over.” And take over it did: Alix dressed as the Cheshire Cat while hosting a 2024 Halloween party on Friday, and she was equal parts committed and chic. “I didn’t really know how the Cheshire Cat was going to behave but I was ready for it. Last year I dressed up as Madonna and she was insane.”
The 23-year-old threw a huge “Mad Forest”-themed party at Keys Nightclub in Los Angeles, with Alice in Wonderland-inspired decor and a guest list including Ava Max, Anastasia Karanikolaou, The Kid Laroi, Landon Barker, and Shay Mitchell. Before the party kicked off in earnest though, Alix captioned a series of behind-the-scenes pics of her costume prosthetic process for Cosmopolitan, capturing the six-hour process and the face full of purple it took to bring her Cheshire Cat to life. Scroll through the photos—and Alix's captions describing them—below.
“When I decided on the Cheshire Cat for my costume this year, I knew I wanted to do full body paint, custom wig and prosthetics for this iconic character. At first, when putting on the cat prosthetic, I was trying to act cool, calm and collected, but I’m actually really claustrophobic, so I was definitely stressing. Honestly I had to start drinking when we were doing this to calm my nerves.”
“I didn’t do a trial run for this costume so I didn’t really know what the final vision was going to look like. Prosthetics are a very ‘trust the process’ kind of glam, but I’m so happy with the decision to use them in the long run. It really pulled the whole look together and helped me tap into my inner Cheshire—even though I was giving myself a jump-scare every time I looked in the mirror.”
“Once the body paint, yellow contact lenses, wig, and whiskers were on, I felt really in character. Instead of a traditional costume, I wanted to lean into a more glam version of the Cheshire, which is why I thought this bright purple Versace bodysuit was perfect. This might sound kind of crazy, but I like to let the character of whoever I’m dressing up as take over. I didn’t really know how the Cheshire cat was going to behave but I was ready for it. Last year I dressed up as Madonna and she was insane.”
“As one could imagine, getting ready took longer than we planned. I started glam at 1 p.m. and wasn’t done until 8:30 p.m. We had to turn the heat up to 80 degrees in the apartment because it was so freezing being spray painted—definitely something I hadn’t thought of until it was already happening. I was butt naked being painted for 6 hours and the apartment air was foggy from all the paint fumes. My friends walked in from getting their hair blown out, like normal people, and saw me standing naked in the living room while being painted. But at this point they should expect nothing less.”
“Naturally, before going to the party I took some photos and filmed content at my apartment for my podcast, Hot Mess with Alix Earle and socials. I climbed on this plant I have in the corner of my apartment because it was reminding me of how the Cheshire Cat sits and observes, as Alice is lost and confused, in the movie and book. I literally just moved into this apartment but we completely tore it apart to make space for the full body painting and backdrop for photos. So worth it.”
“When I got back from the party, I ran to the shower to rip the prosthetic off of my face. Had to be one of the most satisfying feelings ever. The aftermath of the Cheshire Cat is that my apartment is now covered in pink and purple body paint from me running around when I got back... I still have stripes all over me, even after I used a whole jug of oil to try and get it off. Wish me luck as I try to get it all off before my next costume!”
