Adrian Wojnarowski’s suspension appears to have come to an end.
Indiana's Domantas Sabonis has a signficant foot injury and will leave the Orlando bubble to seek treatment from a specialist, sources tell ESPN.— Adrian Wojnarowski (@wojespn) July 24, 2020
Wojnarowski’s return will reportedly land him in the Disney World bubble, but ESPN is still figuring out that timetable according to The Athletic’s Richard Deitsch. Like other reporters on site, Wojnarowski will likely have to quarantine for a week upon arrival.
NBA Media news: Adrian Wojnarowski's ESPN suspension ends tomorrow. Per sources: Woj will ultimately end up reporting from inside the NBA bubble in Orlando, though the dates on that are still being worked on.— Richard Deitsch (@richarddeitsch) July 23, 2020
ESPN originally suspended Wojnarowski without pay on July 11, a day after the reporter replied to a statement from U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) with “F--- you.” Hawley’s office wasted little time in posting a screengrab of Wojnarowski’s email.
With a return on Friday, Wojnarowski was sidelined two weeks since the release of the offending email.
Wojnarowski had been responding to a statement from Hawley blasting the NBA’s financial relationship with China and asking why the league didn’t allow players to wear phrases like “Support Our Troops” and “Back the Blue” on their jerseys for the 2020 season. Hawley isn’t the only Republican senator to go after the NBA over China in recent weeks, as the coronavirus pandemic continues to hammer the U.S.
Woj apologized immediately to senator and ESPN
Soon after the email came to light, Wojnarowski posted an apology calling the email “disrespectful” and “a regrettable mistake.” He said he had reached out to Hawley immediately to apologize directly.
He did not tweet again until Friday.
The suspension came at an inconvenient time for covering basketball, as NBA players had already landed in Orlando with reporters soon to follow. NBA preseason games have since begun, but the league’s official July 30 return is still a week away.
