Adele: My fame got me out of trouble with the police

Adele has confessed to using her fame to get out of trouble with the police, after she was pulled over while driving in Los Angeles.

The Easy On Me singer returned to her hometown to perform at the London Palladium for An Audience With Adele on ITV, in front of a star-studded audience including Dame Emma Thompson, Stormzy, Boy George, Dawn French, Jodie Comer, Emma Watson and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Adele, 33, took questions from the celebrity guests in between songs and was asked by Hollywood star Samuel L Jackson if she had ever used her fame to get out of a parking ticket.

The Tottenham-born singer said: "One time on the 401 Samuel L Jackson, when I first moved to LA - which by the way was never meant to be for as long as it is.

"I was in the fast lane, and I was driving a rental and the windows were tinted a bit too dark or something.

"I was on my way to the supermarket and I was minding my own business and a police car pulled up behind me and I didn't know what to do, so I just stopped!

"So he pulls me over and I followed him.

"I gave him my British driver's license, which looked nothing like me because it was my photo from when I was 17.

"He goes back to the car and he comes back and he's on the phone with his wife who is screaming her head off.

"And he's like, 'I'm so sorry, Adele. You do whatever you need to do.'

"So she saved the day really."

The I Drink Wine singer sipped from a mug of tea on stage in between songs and confessed she was feeling very nervous.

Sipping her tea, Adele called to the backstage crew: "May I get a hot honey, that's a chamomile," and then added: "I'm not a diva!"

The singer - who has opened up about the breakdown of her marriage to ex-husband Simon Konecki on her fourth studio album 30 - launched into new track Easy On Me, and then stopped, telling the band she wanted to start again.

Afterwards Adele told the crowd: "I'm excited but nervous to sing new songs. They've been finished for quite a while, but something like that one just scares the life out of me."

Adele split from Konecki - with whom she shares nine-year-old son Angelo - in April 2019.

30 secured 60.7 million streams globally on the first day it was available, which is one of the biggest debuts in the history of the service.
