Adele has spoken candidly about her recent divorce as part of an upcoming interview special with Oprah Winfrey.

In a clip released ahead of Sunday night's CBS special Adele: One Night Only, the 33-year-old singer discusses how her personal life inspired the lyrics of new song Hold On.

Adele split from husband Simon Konecki — with whom she shares nine-year-old son Angelo — in 2019 after just a year of marriage.

Winfrey asked the star about the hard-hitting words of the track, describing the singer as "brutally honest" in her songwriting.

"My friends always would say ‘hold on’ when I would feel like the lyrics in the verse. But it was just exhausting trying to keep going with it," she said.

Adele added: "It’s a process. You know, the process of a divorce, the process of being a single parent.

“The process of not seeing your child every single day wasn’t really a plan that I had when I became a mum. The process of arriving for yourself every day, turning up for yourself every single day and still running a home, running a business.

"So many people know what I'm talking about and I feel like that as well. I juggle those things as well. I felt like not doing it any more.

"And also trying to move forward with intention, not just trying to get out of it for no reason. It made my feet hurt, walking through all that concrete."
