If you thought the subjects of abortion and dancing didn’t go together, think again. The crew from Reproductive Choice Australia (RCA) – the nation’s peak representative body of pro-choice groups – has organised a flash mob this Sunday September 30 at 11am in Melbourne’s Federation Square, and they want you to join in.
The “Let's End the Stigma” flash mob aims to highlight the appalling practice of abortion-shaming and will be the launching pad for RCA’s national pledge campaign.
According to RCA president Dr Leslie Cannold, the campaign will call on Australians to stop abortion-shaming and ask them to refuse to stand silent when others engage in the practice.
“This campaign couldn't be more current or necessary,” said Dr Cannold. “Stigma and shaming breed silence and ignorance; this is the fertile ground in which repressive abortion laws and policies flourish.
“The flash mob and pledge are concrete things the community can do to stand up for women, and against abortion shame. Communities induce shame. Communities can stop it.”
This Sunday’s flash mob coincides with the international campaign for the decriminalisation of abortion. In Australia, abortion is still in the criminal statutes in NSW and Queensland. For more details and to register for the flash mob, visit www.reproductivechoiceaustralia.org.au/flashmob.
