This $75 Million Estate in San Diego Makes Bill Gates Your Neighbor
In the 1930s, a member of a prominent Bay Area ranching family snapped up an undeveloped beachfront sandlot in California’s San Diego County. The suberbly located property in the coveted seaside community of Del Mar remained in the same family but sat vacant for nearly 100 years.
Now, after a dozen years of navigating the strict regulations on building along California’s coastline and a prolonged battle with a neighbor over how big of a house could be built, the family has just completed construction of what’s been dubbed Ocean House, a sprawling compound they’ve now flipped onto the market with an asking price of $75 million. The estate is listed with Rande Turner of Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty, and if it fetches its tall asking price or even comes close, the deal would go down as the most expensive sale in the area; the current record was set by the $44.1 million sale of a beachfront home just down the road earlier this year.

The award-winning California-based architecture and design firm Studio William Hefner was tapped to spearhead the ground-up legacy project, which takes its cues from superyacht design according to marketing materials. The design makes smart use of high-end, marine-grade materials so that it can withstand the harsh coastal elements, including wind, sun and fog. For starters, there’s a DaVinci roof that can endure gale-force winds, and a seawall was added in 2021 to protect the abode’s 75 feet of ocean frontage.
“The compound is designed to be as functional as it is beautiful, providing a low-maintenance yet luxurious setting for coastal living,” notes the listing. Altogether, the contemporary beach retreat comprises a five-bedroom main house, a pool house and two one-bedroom guest dwellings across the two-third-acre parcel.
Naturally, the home makes the most of its oceanfront setting with a giant deck that spans the width of the property and gated access to the sandy shore. Additional highlights include a vast courtyard with a flat expanse of lawn, a swimming pool with an inset spa and a ping-pong pavilion.
Adding to its cachet, the stately residence at 2920 Camino Del Mar is the first new home to be built on this specific stretch of beach in 15 years, Turner told Mansion Global. And you’ll be in good company too, considering Bill Gates lives within walking distance of the property. According to The Wall Street Journal, the tech entrepreneur and his wife Melinda doled out a cool $43 million for a six-bedroom oceanfront home in Del Mar in March 2020. The spread was formerly owned by Madeleine Pickens, the former wife of Texas billionaire T. Boone Pickens.
