Moody alpine passes, sweeping coastlines and a whole lot of ‘scenic drama’ best describes our majestic neighbour across the ditch. A destination boasting everything from Geysers to glow worms to hiking Wanaka and wine-tasting, New Zealand is made for your bucket list.

But the land of the long white cloud is not just known for aesthetically pleasing landscapes – there is plenty of unique food and drink to consume and fuss over. Here are seven of the most-delicious things to come from NZ…

1: Kim Crawford Wines: Rosè and Sauvignon Blanc
Most Aussies are obsessed with New Zealand wine. The landscape of the Marlborough region on the northern tip of the South island produces light and citrusy whites. The Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc treats the tongue with a lingering flavour of passion fruit, melon, and grapefruit. A vibrant drink to lift a Friday night! Our other favourite is the Kim Crawford Rosè, a soft and luscious choice for entertaining. Pair it with summer salads, oysters, smoked salmon and lobster.

2: Hokey Pokey ice cream
New Zealand folk are serious contenders when it comes to making world-class ice cream. There are artisan gelato shops on every corner but it’s the OG that gets our vote. Hokey Pokey ice cream is a rich vanilla hybrid with chunks of honeycomb and candy pebbles. An iconic Kiwi treat.

3: Hāngi
A traditional Māori way of cooking using a pit in the earth to smoke meat and vegetables. A long-established custom to get family and friends together, hot stones are placed in the hole and baskets of food wrapped in wet cloth are placed inside. It takes about four hours to cook and the smokey fall-off-the-bone meat is a life-changer.

4: Pavlova
The age-old debate… is Pavlova Aussie or Kiwi? One thing is for sure, the dessert is delicious. How could you go wrong with crusted meringue casing a gooey-pillowy middle and topped with fresh cream and local fruits.

5: Canterbury lamb
The South Island’s lamb is flown to top restaurants all over the world. Any eatery in Canterbury will serve classic herb-crusted roast lamb rack with mint sauce and root veggies. Don’t forget the Kim Crawford Pinot Noir to wash it down – the subtle hints of oak help fill out the palate.

6: Kumara
If you like sweet potato then Kumara will be your best friend. Rich in fiber and antioxidants, this root vegetable is best served roasted, mashed or in fry form at a local gourmet burger joint (with garlic aioli!) Yum.

7: Thor director Taika Waititi
A talented movie director with looks to boot! Taika’s gone from hilarious small-time indies like Eagle vs Shark to directing Chris Hemsworth in Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok and is the champion for diversity Hollywood so desperately needs. Certainly lovely and our lucky number seven of the most delicious things to come from New Zealand.
