In 2021, TLC viewers were introduced to Thederick Barnes on My 600-Lb Life. But how is he doing now?
Barnes, of Gretna, Fla., was completely dependent on his mother at the beginning of Season 9, Episode 2 of My 600-Lb Life. Although viewers hoped to see him change his eating habits and lifestyle choices, his journey stalled out for months.
He sought help from bariatric surgeon Dr. Younan Nowzaradan (known as Dr. Now) in Houston, Texas, but was Barnes able to change his ways and qualify for weight-loss surgery?
Thederick Barnes' weight loss journey was featured in My 600-Lb Life Season 9, Episode 2.
When TLC viewers first met Barnes, he was 32 and weighed in at 740 pounds. His size greatly limited his mobility, and his binge-eating habits to cope with past trauma only made the situation worse.
At his next in-person follow-up with Dr. Now, which came three months into his journey, Barnes weighed 692 pounds. He weighed in at 615 pounds by his five-month appointment.
Although Dr. Now approved Barnes for weight-loss surgery, further testing to make sure he was a good candidate revealed a heart condition, cardiomyopathy, that prevented it from actually happening.
"He's in some degree of congestive heart failure," Dr. Now explained. "So the strain his weight is still putting on him is taking too much of a toll. And so even though Thederick has lost around 120 pounds, he's still very high risk for any kind of procedure."
The new goal for Barnes was to lose 50 more pounds so they could run the test again before undergoing weight loss surgery—but his episode ended there.

How is Thederick Barnes from My 600-Lb Life doing now?
On his public Facebook account, Barnes' most recent update included a photo of himself from September 2024, seemingly on his birthday.
"Like start off saying thank the lord for waking me up this morning and see another chapter in my life Big 37 Big Virgo SEASON," he captioned the update.
He posted the same picture on his Instagram account.
Although Barnes hasn't shared recent updates about his weight loss journey on social media, hopefully, he is healthy and thriving today!
