49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo will start against Miami after missing two games with ankle injury

Jimmy Garoppolo will be back in Week 5 for the San Francisco 49ers.

Coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday that the quarterback would return to the starting lineup on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins. Garoppolo missed two games since suffering a right ankle injury in Week 2 against the New York Jets.

Garoppolo returned to practice this week and isn’t on the 49ers’ Friday injury report. He returns after the 49ers lost to the Philadelphia Eagles at home to drop to 2-2.

Nick Mullens took over when Garoppolo exited the Jets game at halftime and played well against both the Jets and New York Giants in an easy Week 3 win. But Mullens struggled against the Eagles and was benched in the second half after throwing a pick six that led to an 11-point fourth-quarter lead for the Eagles.

C.J. Beathard took over for Mullens late in that Eagles game.

Garoppolo is 33-of-49 passing for 390 yards and four touchdowns in six quarters of action. He threw two touchdowns in a season-opening loss to the Arizona Cardinals and was 14-of-16 passing for 131 yards and two scores before he had to leave the Jets game because of the ankle injury.

49ers still have a lot of injuries

Garoppolo’s return is welcome news for one of the most injury-ravaged teams in the NFL. The 49ers have listed four players — including cornerbacks Dontae Johnson and Emmanuel Moseley — as out for Sunday. Running back Raheem Mostert is questionable with a knee injury, and wide receiver Deebo Samuel is questionable because of an illness.

The four players listed as out don’t include defensive ends Nick Bosa and Dee Ford and defensive tackle Solomon Thomas. Both Bosa and Thomas suffered torn ACLs against the Jets, and Ford hasn’t played since the Cardinals game because of a back injury.
