This 3-Ingredient Snack Is the 'Best Thing' Our Culinary Producer Has Learned All Year

Meet "charred-cuterie."

'S’mores season’ can mean different things to different people. To some, it’s the summer months, often associated with campfires, hot dog dinners, and ghost stories. Here in the South, we embrace it more in the fall, when the leaves start to drop and it’s cool enough that you actually want to cozy up to a bonfire.

Lately, though, a new s’mores trend has popped up online, one that breaks free from seasonal traditions and regional barriers. You can make it anytime, indoors or out. All it requires is a small adjustment to your marshmallow-chocolate-graham mindset. Here’s a hint: think savory.

What Are Savory S'mores?

Introducing savory s’mores, the snack sensation that’s been lighting up the internet—and for good reason. Our very own Culinary Producer, Nicole McLaughlin, even says it’s “the best thing [she’s] learned all year.”

“Whoever came up with savory s’mores is a genius,” said McLaughlin. “It’s just a fun way to do cheese and crackers, and with the variety available, there are so many flavor combinations you can do.”

Here’s how it works: instead of flame-roasting a marshmallow to golden, gooey perfection, you instead roast a small block of creamy cheese. The graham cracker is swapped out for a regular cracker, and the chocolate square is replaced with the sweet jam or spread of your choice. The end result is a campfire snack that's just as warm, melty, and crispy as a standard s’mores, but with a rich, cheesy, and totally unexpected spin.

When McLaughin tried the trend on social media, the video garnered over 3 million views in one day, with users commenting, “This blew my MIND,” and “This is a faaar superior option to s’mores.”

But, nothing summed up our final thoughts on "charred-cuterie" quite like this comment: “Omg, why didn’t we think of this sooner?”

How to Make Savory S’mores

The best part about savory s’mores? There are no rules.

Although your average s’more can get a fun flavor upgrade with additions like Nutella, peanut butter, or even Reese’s cups, the standard formula is pretty much the same; if we had to guess, Jet-Puffed marshmallows, Honey Maid graham crackers, and Hershey’s chocolate are all staples in your s’mores supply.

Well, with savory s’mores, the world (more specifically, the grocery store) is your oyster. Just take it from McLaughlin: “I was shocked at how many snack size varieties were available at the regular grocery store. The Gouda Baby Bell and the baby Brie bites were my favorite,” she added.

Once you select your cheese, crackers, and spreads, all that’s left to do is get cooking. Of course, an outdoor fire will always be the most fun, but for an easy indoor option, you can utilize a mini smokeless fire pit instead.

Cook the cheese on a skewer—just like you would a marshmallow—until it’s perfectly gooey. Carefully spread the melted cheese onto a cracker, add your chosen topping, and sandwich it with another cracker. In no time, you’ve got a three-ingredient snack that's interactive to make and irresistible to eat. Pair the bites with a bottle of wine, and you’ll know where to find us for the rest of the evening.

So, if you’re ready to swap out the standard melted marshmallow experience for a brand-new, cheesy ride, take our hand and come join us on the savory side.
